KasmVNC-enabled containers are good to go for self-hosted purposes and internal setups, but their commercial offerings and effectiveness in the field has yet to be assessed.
I’ve personally used KasmVNC plenty of times for running something like Firefox on a remote NAS and it IS quite effective and consumes far less resources than usually running a desktop environment and using VNC to connect and interact with it.
I also believe (but not proven) that it’s a more secure implementation since at least you’re dealing with the environment in a viewport on a browser (i.e., “web-based”), rather than the VNC protocol and its legacy cruft and connecting directly to the ports within. You can at least secure the KasmVNC endpoint behind typical HTTPS and WAF protections.
KasmVNC is an advanced open-source VNC server technology designed for streaming desktop, application, and web containers directly to web browsers[1][2]. It represents a significant departure from traditional VNC solutions, offering several key innovations:
Key Features
Web-Native Architecture
- Designed as a web-based, agentless remote desktop solution[1][2]
- Includes built-in web server and websocket capabilities[4]
Performance Enhancements
- Offers 150%+ increase in frame rate compared to previous versions[1][2]
- Supports 4K, 60 FPS streaming with lossless image quality[1]
- Implements advanced compression techniques like WebP image format for up to 30% better compression[3]
Security and Usability
Cybersecurity Improvements
- Enhanced security with HTTPS transport[1][2]
- Supports complex username and password authentication[3]
- Disabled legacy VNC authentication methods[1]
Advanced Capabilities
- Data Loss Prevention features[4]
- Clipboard and keystroke logging[3]
- Multi-threaded image encoding[1]
- WebRTC UDP Transit[1]
- Dynamic image compression based on screen changes[1]
Technical Specifications
- Developed in collaboration with VirtualGL and Arm[1]
- Supports GPU and Arm processors[1]
- Compatible with multiple Linux distributions via Debian and RPM packages[4]
- Designed for enterprise environments and scalable remote workspace delivery[2]
KasmVNC is part of the broader Kasm Workspaces ecosystem, which aims to revolutionize digital workspace streaming using open-source, web-native container technology[1].
